Things You Should Consider When Buying an Instrument
- Tone. When judging a sound, tone or voice, think about an instrument's qualities like its brightness, warmth, depth, color, fulness, richness, transparency, lightness, volume, projection and resonance. How do these things sound up close or at a distance?
- Playability. How does an instrument actually feel? How easy is it to play, both across the strings and down the neck? Is it set up to make playing effortless? Is the instrument as responsive as possible?
- Aesthetics. Do you like the looks?
- Longevity. How long will this instrument last if cared for properly? How long will it be useful to you or suit the style of music you intend to play with it?
- Trade-in value. Will the instrument have retained its value by the time you're ready to upgrade?
Danger: Cold/Dry Weather!
Cold and dryness can:
- Crack the wood on your guitar
- Crack the finish on your guitar
- Suddenly make your guitar play badly
What can you do to help your guitar?
- Buy a humidifier for your guitar and USE it
- Use a humidifier in your home
- Don't store your guitar near a heat source
- Keep your guitar in its case (with a humidifier)
- Don't hang your guitar on a masonry wall, especially an outside wall
- If you take your guitar with you in your car, keep it inside with you, not in your trunk
- Don't leave your guitar in a parked car
- If your guitar has been outside and gotten cold, let it warm up in its case before playing it
- Move to Florida
