Some important postnatal interventions and practices can reduce risk. At many points in time, it is also possible to comprehensively record interventions and practices.

Postnatal care and emergency services for new mothers may also include assessment and counseling of mothers before returning home after delivery in a health facility and then during home visits by district health workers or after delivery at a health facility.

In general, the main elements after childbirth include:

1. Health advice and education on recognizing danger signs and finding appropriate care (for mothers and newborns).

2. Advice on education and health care such as exclusive breastfeeding and best practices for heating treatment.

3. Distribution and advice for routine preventive measures.

4. Case assessment and management and advice for any complications or risk conditions identified.

Through these same contacts, we have the opportunity to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns so that programs and services focus on providing the necessary care for both. This more integrated approach is reflected in the latest guidelines from the World Health Organization.

Home visits by community health workers are being promoted as a postnatal care plan based on a promising pilot project in South Asia that demonstrates the potential to decrease neonatal mortality. However, it is difficult to get comparable benefits to more general scaling conditions.
