Often employed in applications relying on rigid materials for the transport of water and other liquids, the stainless steel tube has come a long way since the earliest experiments. A French scientist extensively researched the making of stainless steel over 100 years ago. Today, the science is well developed, with many special stainless steel alloys being developed for specific uses.

Desirable for Multiple Uses

The metal has many desirable qualities, especially in maintaining clean water, and is ideal for a wide range of applications. Stainless steel tubing is also useful for providing structural support in vehicles and buildings. Tubes are generally manufactured according to highly standardized sizes and specifications, fit for purpose. Tubes and pipes differ only in the level of engineering invested in manufacture.

The Size and Quality of a Tube

There are three major methods for making tubes, allowing for a range of sizes, shapes, and quality. Tubes are made in triangular, square, or polygonal forms, and not just the standard cylindrical shape. Sometimes, the tube will undergo additional processing to meet specific requirements and consist of alloys specially designed to withstand different pressures.

Seamless Tubes of Stainless Steel

There are two primary types of tubes, one of which is seamless. Extrusion is the method of manufacturing, and stainless steel is formed by pressing it by a die into the shape that is desired for the tube. This kind of tube is manufactured using either cold or hot processes. This process is highly efficient and reliable, however, it requires an extensive amount of preparation.
